Arthroscopy

  • Arthroscopy is a surgical technique where the inside of the joint is inspected and different surgical procedures are performed by inserting a scope and other special instrument inside the joint through key-hole incision. The dynamic image seen inside the joint by scope is captured by a camera and transmitted to the monitor by fibre optic. Surgeon sees the image on monitor and does the surgical procedure inside joint with the help of special instruments. Arthroscopy needs very small incision without disrupting the normal anatomical tissue continuity so lesser blood loss and early recovery.

Following conditions of knee joint can be treated with arthroscopic procedure:

    Arthroscopic procedure for Sports injury:

    • Anterior cruciet ligament (ACL) injury reconstruction
    • Posterior cruciet ligament (PCL) injury reconstruction
    • Medial patella-femoral ligament (MPFL) injury reconstruction
    • Meniscus repair or menischectomy.

Arthroscopic procedure for Degenerative joint disease:

    • Micro-fracture
    • Meniscus root reattachment

Arthroscopic procedure for other cartilage disease:

    • Autologous Cartilage Implantation (ACI)
    • Osteochondral autolologous graft transfer (OTS)

    ACL Reconstruction

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL reconstruction) is a surgical technique where a tissue graft replaces the damaged anterior cruciate ligament to restore its function after injury. The surgery is performed with arthroscopy.

    PCL reconstruction

PCL injury is less common than ACL. PCL reconstruction is like ACL reconstruction done arthroscopically. The procedure is very much similar to ACL reconstruction but the rehabilitation and progression of recovery differs from ACL reconstruction

    MPFL reconstruction

Medial patella-femoral ligament is an important anatomical structure present on the medial or inner aspect of knee. It plays a crucial role in the stability of knee. Like PCL MPFL injuries are rarely isolated. Integrity of MPFL is very important to establish before doing any ligament reconstruction because if left untreated the ligament reconstruction will fail.
